Sources of Nitrate and Ozone in the Marine Boundary Layer of the Tropical North Atlantic

چکیده
During the period April 1989 through December 1990, °3 concentrations in the marine boundary layer at Barbados, West Indies, show a pronounced seasonal cycle. Daily averaged values in the winter and spring often fall in the range of 25-35 ppbv for periods of several days, and they seldom fall below 20 ppbv. In contrast, during the summer, values typically fall in the range of 10-20 ppbv. During the winter-spring period, there is a very strong negative correlation between °3 and a number of aerosol species, including N03"' These anticorrelations appear to be driven by changing transport patterns over the North Atlantic as opposed to chemical reactions involving °3 and nitrogen species in the atmosphere. Analyses of isentropic trajectories clearly show that high °3 and low N03are associated with transport from higher latitudes and high altitudes. Conversely, high N03" and relatively low °3 are associated with transport from Africa. Our study suggests that North America and the middle troposphere (and stratosphere! are not strong sources for N03" over the tropical North Atlantic. The strong correlation of N03with 2 Orb

Modelling the spring ozone maximum and the interhemispheric asymmetry in the remote marine boundary layer 1. Comparison with surface and ozonesonde measurements
Here we report a modelling study of the spring ozone maximum and its interhemispheric asymmetry in the remote marine boundary layer (MBL). The modelled results are examined at the surface and on a series of time-height cross sections at several locations spread over the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Pacific Oceans. Comparison of model with surface measurements at remote MBL stations indicate a ...
متن کاملIsotopic composition of atmospheric nitrate in a tropical marine boundary layer.
Long-term observations of the reactive chemical composition of the tropical marine boundary layer (MBL) are rare, despite its crucial role for the chemical stability of the atmosphere. Recent observations of reactive bromine species in the tropical MBL showed unexpectedly high levels that could potentially have an impact on the ozone budget. Uncertainties in the ozone budget are amplified by ou...
متن کاملDetection of iodine monoxide in the tropical free troposphere.
Atmospheric iodine monoxide (IO) is a radical that catalytically destroys heat trapping ozone and reacts further to form aerosols. Here, we report the detection of IO in the tropical free troposphere (FT). We present vertical profiles from airborne measurements over the Pacific Ocean that show significant IO up to 9.5 km altitude and locate, on average, two-thirds of the total column above the ...
متن کاملThe influence of Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection patterns on temperature regimes in South Caspian Sea coastal areas: a study of Golestan Province, North Iran
The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...
متن کاملCampanian and Maastrichtian Biostratigraphy and Paleoenvironment in Jorband Section, North of Iran
The study of planktonic foraminifera in Jorband section reveals two major events in Campanian- Maastrichtian boundary and early-late Maastrichtian bio-diversification. In this study, occurrence and species richness of planktonic foraminifera in Jorband area show the warm marine environment dominant during early to late Campanian and it could be correlating by tropical and subtropical biozones. ...
